Right Support on way for Parents ?
A new research project to help parents with a learning disability find the right support to raise their children. The project’s website gives parents with a learning disability access to individuals and organisations that can provide support. It explores the options available and includes a questionnaire that will be used to develop an understanding of issues affecting these parents. The project is being funded by the Baring Foundation and run by the University of Bristol’s Norah Fry Research Centre. Its research shows that parents with a learning disability are at greater risk of having their children taken into care, often because they don’t know where to turn for help. A group of parents with a learning disability are working as advisers for the project. They have met to discuss their own experiences and the support they have received. “They’ve already taken two of my kids,” explained one father. “We really want to keep this little one. We are doing everything they tell us so that she can stay with us.” An online survey is being conducted as part of the project. People with a learning disability, professionals working with parents in mainstream and specialist services are being asked to visit the site and register their views. Go to: www.rightsupport.org
